Bi-lingual Judicial Clerk Role:
If you are a professional individual who is bilingual in French and English, dedicated to client service, and would like to be a part of an enthusiastic and diverse team, we have the opportunity for you! The Calgary Court of Queen’s Bench and The Edmonton Court of Queen’s Bench, within the Resolution and Court Administration Services Division, are looking to fill permanent and temporary Bilingual Judicial Clerk positions.
As a Bilingual Judicial Clerk, you will demonstrate the ability to read, translate and clearly communicate both verbally and in writing for trials and other court related matters where the accused has chosen to have their trial heard in French as allowed by the Criminal Code of Canada.
You will represent the administration of Court in a responsible and professional manner that reflects the fair and equitable delivery of justice in Alberta. The shifting priorities between the courtroom and assisting the public and lawyers at the counter, provides diversity on a daily basis.
Your key responsibilities will include providing bilingual support in court, at the counter and completing office duties that will include but are not limited to:
- Organizing and managing administrative processes within the courtroom for criminal, civil, family, commercial, surrogate, and bankruptcy matters.
- Maintaining the court record, including operation of the digital recording system; maintaining the decorum of the court.
- Entering and being responsible for exhibits entered into the record.
- Liaising with bilingual stakeholders such as the judiciary, lawyers, police and the public.
- Reviewing and filing documents in adherence with the Alberta Rules of Court and various Provincial and Federal statutes.
- Providing bilingual assistance to the public and legal community at the counter and on the phone
- General office duties, including telephone, and incoming mail.
- Data entry, production and processing of all Court Orders in English and French.
- Email filing
The ideal candidates will possess:
- Excellent verbal and written command of both the French and English languages
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills to help build a collaborative environment
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Excellent keyboarding skills in French and English
- Keen attention to detail and ability to multi-task
- A high degree of accuracy when communicating in both French and English while meeting high-volume demands
- Exceptional time management skills
- Ability to be agile and adapt to a changing environment
- Ability to handle high-stress situations
Qualifications for a Judicial Clerk role:
Judicial Clerk: High School diploma and at least six months of related experience.
Senior Judicial Clerk: High School diploma and at least two years of related experience, including eighteen months of directly related experience as a Judicial Clerk and the successful completion of the departmental para-legal program.
Equivalency: Directly related experience or education considered on the basis of: one year of experience for one year of education or one year of education for one year of experience.
Bi-lingual Judicial Assistant Role:

Judicial Assistants are senior frontline representatives of the Court and Alberta Justice, supporting the judiciary, counsel, and litigants in the Alberta Justice system. You will be responsible for managing administrative functions related to members of the judiciary, including decision preparation, formatting, and filing; scheduling; arranging travel; calendar management, committee work, and other executive assistant duties as required. You will also provide back-up to the other Judicial Assistant positions.
Your excellent knowledge of the Court system, Court procedures and relevant legislation will allow you to identify and deal quickly with complex technical problems as they arise. You will ensure proper compliance with legislation, rules, practice notes and notices to the profession, while at the same time assisting in the efficient managing of matters before the court.
You will have daily contact with the judiciary, lawyers, Court personnel, unrepresented litigants and others. Your excellent interpersonal skills will be needed to liaise with these key stakeholders before, during, and subsequent to Court proceedings.
Competencies for these positions include: excellent communication and judgment, time management skills, attention to detail, punctuality, multi-tasking, ability to work independently and without supervision, conflict management, dependability, professionalism, diplomacy and a good working knowledge of law procedures and practices.
The successful candidates must act in a responsible and professional manner reflecting the fair and equitable delivery of justice in Alberta.
Qualifications for a Judicial Assistant: Two-year diploma in a related field plus at least one year progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described below.
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
